Thursday

Yeah, we woke up late again. We were planned to meet the Tibia friend at 1 pm. But she called us and said that she would visit her grandpa at the hospital. So we would meet later, at 4 pm.

After we had dinner, we realised we had 5 minutes left to go to the shopping mall, to meet there. So we rushed a bit. When we arrived she wasn´t there yet, she was still in the hospital. Mauricio and I decided to play some games in the gamehall, it was fun :)

Then we waited outside for the Tibia friend, Camilla, and her sister. They finally arrived and we greeted each other. We decided to go shop a bit, but after a while we realised the prices aren´t ¨really low¨. Camilla talked about downtown, the clothes are cheaper over there, since they are mostly produced in Chile itself. So we walked to Mauricio´s house, to get the car. On the tiles, we saw a very new Mickey Mouse version a la George Bush.

When we got into the car, Mauricio´s mom asked us to pick up the small swimming pool, which was repared at an uncle´s place. So, after picking up the swimming pool, we finally drove downtown. And over there.. ¨Houston, we got a problem¨. There seemed to be something sticky on the backseats of the car. Camilla was wearing a white pants, and the sticky stuff got onto the backpart of her pants. We tried to hide it with my green bag, but it didn´t really work. So we drove to her house, to change the pants.

Then we finally got back and went to shop some. Each one of us bought an icecream, only Mauricio preferred some sorta fruit juice. I guess I´m the only one who bought clothes. Just 1 sweet purple shirt. Maybe I could make a picture of it later.

Later, we drove back to Camilla´s house and said goodbye. I think we had a nice time :)


Mauricio and I went home, where we stayed for a while. Then we went to his friends, for some sorta meeting. We met at the internet cafe. There were some people, who also played Tibia. But they play in another server, called Nova. His friends were planned to go to the beach. They all were supposed to go walk.

Mauricio and I decided to go by car. Near the beach, you got those kinda cafes. We went there to eat a hotdog.. and hey, it´s really delicious! And we also saw DragonballZ on TV, haha.

Then we went to his friends, at the beach. And talked a bit. We tried to scare seagulls, but they were hard to find. Or the straydogs found them before I did.. (Bad dog!) His friends were all very kind with me, just very ¨open¨. And ofcourse they wanted to learn bad Dutch words ;)

Around 3 AM, we all got sorta tired. We brought a girl home. I think her name is Carlinja (if I didn´t miss-spell it). One of his friends asked Mauricio if he would be able to see me again, while going out (as example). Sure, that´s fine by me :)

Today we´re gonna shop a little bit more, just a little bit! I don´t want him to suffer, haha! And perhaps I´ll meet one of his friends, called David.

Wednesday

Almost everyday we wake up after 12 AM, or a little before 12 AM. That happened yesterday too. We didn´t have breakfast by then, cause we would have lunch around 2-3 PM. And that´s the big meal of the day. The funny thing is, which dish ever will be made, there´s always tomato served on the table. And the sisters of Mauricio always want me to sit next to them, so sweet :)

After dinner, we went to a wall- and tile decoration shop. Mauricio´s mom bought an appartment some time ago. At the moment, a repairman is fixing it. That´s why we were picking a paintingcolor for the living room. I think after all, we picked the color light yellow.

After that, we went to the shopping mall (which is 3 streets far from his home.. is this the dream of every girl?) Over there, his mom bought swimming clothes, while I tried to fit in a top all the time. Turned out to be a too big top. Why? Cause it´s supposed to hide a tummie. ¨Well, no.. thanks xD¨

Then his mom and his 2 sisters went swimming in the swimming pool, where the appartment is located.

Mauricio and I went back for a while to the shopping mall, to look some more for new clothes. But no, found nothing. Afterwards, we went to a big shopping mall, to buy some things for his mom. We had to buy some sorta ¨bath mats¨, but the only ones they had in stock.. weren´t quite attractive ._.

Since we were hungry, we eated at Mac donalds. Then we bought a present for his cousin, since it was her birthday. Then we went to the ¨gamehall¨. It´s the same as ¨Treasure island¨ in Scheveningen. We´ve gotten better at some kinda shooting game, cause we played it for 3 times already, haha.

Then we went home, to watch the dvd ¨The incredibles¨. Near 12 PM, we went to his cousin. The party was held at his grandparents place. They also had a barbecue. Some of Mauricio´s cousins tried to talk to me in Spanish. It was hard, but I understood a little bit. After we ate, Mauricio and I went upstairs. In his uncle´s bedroom, we watched the serie ¨Lost¨. At a certain moment, I almost fell asleep. Cause I was so tired. But what do you want, at 3 o´clock at night. So we went home quickly.

Vandaag ga ik iemand ontmoeten, die ik al een tijdje via Tibia kende. We hebben om 4 uur afgesproken. Ik denk dat het wel gezellig wordt, aangezien we gaan shoppen ;) Je hoort het nog wel!

Bijna elke dag staan we na 12 uur op, of tegen 12 uur. Dat gebeurde gisteren dus ook. We hebben toen maar niet ontbeten, aangezien we rond 2-3 uur gingen lunchen. En dat is de grote maaltijd van de dag. Het grappige is, welk gerecht ook wordt klaargemaakt, er staat altijd tomaat op tafel. En de zusjes van Mauricio willen altijd dat ik naast hen zit, is wel lief :)

Na het eten gingen we naar een wand- en tegeldecoratie winkel. Mauricio´s moeder heeft een tijd geleden een appartement gekocht. Die wordt momenteel opgeknapt door een klusjesman en daarom gingen we een verfkleur uitkiezen voor de woonkamer. Ik denk dat het uiteindelijk de kleur lichtgeel geworden is.

Daarna gingen we naar het winkelcentrum (dat 3 straten verwijderd is van zijn huis.. is dit de droom van elk meisje?). Daar heeft de moeder zwemkleding gekocht, terwijl ik telkens een topje ging passen. Bleek achteraf een te groot topje te zijn. Waarom? Omdat het een buikje zou moeten verhullen. ¨Nou nee.. bedankt xD¨

Toen ging zijn moeder en zijn 2 zusjes zwemmen in het zwembad op het terrein waar het appartement zich bevond.

Mauricio en ik gingen nog eventjes terug naar het winkelcentrum, om nog verder te kijken voor nieuwe kleren. Maar nee, niks gevonden. Daarna gingen we naar een groot winkelcentrum, om inkopen te doen voor zijn moeder. We moesten een paar nieuwe badmatten kopen, maar de enige die op voorraad waren.. waren niet bepaald de aantrekkelijksten ._.

Aangezien we toen honger hadden, hebben we gelijk gegeten bij Mac Donalds. Vervolgens hebben we een cadeautje gekocht voor zijn nicht, aangezien die toen jarig was. Daarna gingen we naar de ¨gamehall¨. Het is hetzelfde als ¨Schateiland¨ in Scheveningen. We zijn steeds beter geworden in een bepaald schietspel, omdat we het al 3 keer gespeeld hebben, haha.

Daarna gingen we naar huis, om de dvd ¨The incredibles¨ te kijken. Tegen twaalven gingen we naar zijn nicht toe. Het feestje werd bij zijn opa en oma gehouden. Ze hadden ook een barbecue. Een aantal van Mauricio´s nichtjes probeerden tegen mij te praten in het Spaans. Dat viel nog niet mee, maar ik begreep het een beetje. Nadat we gegeten hadden, gingen Mauricio en ik naar boven. Daar hebben we in zijn ooms slaapkamer de serie ¨Lost¨ gekeken. Op een gegeven moment viel ik bijna in slaap, omdat ik zo moe was. Maar wat wil je ook he, om 3 uur ´s nachts. Toen zijn we maar snel naar huis gegaan.

New year a la Chile

For the first time I celebrated new year in a foreign country. It takes some time to get used to it, a tropical new year. It was such a busy day.

We celebrated new year in another city, that is located in the mountains. Actually it´s not that far from the city Iquique. It´s like 20 minutes driving by car.

We celebrated new year with his family, at his aunt´s home. In the streets, I saw that people made some kinda big doll. Think about a family member, when he or she becomes 50. They make something like that in Chile, but then for new year. They burn the doll shortly after new year, with the thought: hereby we leave the evil behind us.

Ofcourse they got firework too. From the city, I saw that Iquique had a firework event on the beach. I have to say, it´s nothing comparing to Holland! But in Chili firework is so illigal. So people keep it small and simple.

December 30th I made some ¨oliebollen¨. The family loves it. The ¨oliebollen¨ reminds them of some kind of bread, named ¨Berlin¨. They enjoyed the ¨Aardappel anders¨ too, which I made some days ago.

After we celebrated new year with the family, we went back home. Mauricio and I ¨refreshed¨ ourselves, and then we headed to a party of his friends. We wanted to stay for an hour. But in the final we stayed much longer, till like 6 o´clock in the morning.

Then we woke up around 1:30 pm. We had breakfast, dressed ourselves and visited the family again. Seems everyday we got a tight scedule.

Some days ago, we´ve gone to the beach for the ¨first¨ time. It lasted shorter than we expected. But that´s what you can expect when you feel stings in your lowerleg, cause of a jellyfish, which floads against you. But it´s already fine, after an hour the pain was gone. It can´t overrule the fun.

Voor het eerst heb ik nieuw jaar in het buitenland gevierd. Het is even wennen, een tropisch nieuw jaar. Het was zo´n drukke dag.

We hebben nieuw jaar gevierd in een andere stad, dat in de bergen ligt. Eigelijk bevindt het zich niet zover van de stad Iquique. Het is ongeveer 20 minuten rijden met de auto.

We vierden nieuw jaar met zijn familie, bij zijn tante thuis. Op straat zag ik dat mensen een soort grote pop gemaakt hadden. Denk maar aan een familielid, wanneer hij of zij 50 jaar wordt. Zoiets maken ze ook in Chili, maar dan voor nieuw jaar. Ze verbranden de pop kort na nieuw jaar, met de gedachte: hiermee laten we het kwade achter ons.

Natuurlijk hebben ze ook vuurwerk. Vanaf het stadje zag ik dat men in Iquique op het strand een vuurwerk evenement hadden. Ik moet zeggen, het is niks vergeleken met Nederland! Maar in Chili is vuurwerk natuurlijk ook zwaar illigaal. Dus houd men het bij klein, simpel vuurwerk.

De dag voor oudjaar had ik nog oliebollen klaargemaakt. De familie vind het heerlijk. De oliebollen doet hen denken aan een bepaald soort brood, genaamd ¨Berlin¨. De ¨Aardappel anders¨ viel trouwens ook in de smaak, dat ik een paar dagen terug had klaargemaakt.

Nadat we nieuw jaar gevierd hadden met de familie, gingen we terug naar huis. Mauricio en ik hebben ons even opgefrist en toen gingen we naar een feestje van zijn vrienden. Onze bedoeling was om een uurtje te blijven. Uiteindelijk bleven we veel langer, tot ongeveer 6 uur ´s ochtends.

Vervolgens werden we rond half 2 ´s middags wakker. Ontbeten, aangekleed en weer een bezoek aan de familie gebracht. Het lijkt erop dat we elke dag een druk schema hebben.

Een paar dagen geleden zijn we voor het eerst ¨echt¨ naar het strand gegaan. Dat duurde korter dan gepland. Maar dat kan je ook verwachten, als je steken in je onderbeen voelt vanwege een kwal die tegen je aandrijft. Maar het is al goed, na een uur was de pijn al voorbij. En het kan de pret toch echt niet bederven.

Comparing to Holland

Comparing to Holland, Chile is a whole different world. My own family would understand what I mean, if I think about the situation in Indonesia.

In Holland, you always got those huge ¨buildingprojects¨ and all the houses look the same. In Chile, at least in Iquique, every house got its own identity. Every house got its own color.

In Europe, we are used to a cold christmas. But here, in the middle of summer, there´s christmas decoration hanging at the houses. No, don´t expect they got real trees in here, haha.

In here, they got some sorta tradition around christmas time. The employments of companies have to give a little bit of their salary every year. The money will be used for presents, which are for the kids of the employments. Then, the company will use a big truck, decorates it with christmas decoration and drives through the streets. A fake santa claus (have we ever had a real one?) gives the presents to the kids, and throws candy. This really reminds me of the Dutch santa claus.

I have to say, we use the car a lot. Mac donald is at the end of the street, but we still go there by car, haha.

Daddy, Mauricio really spoils me! I didn´t have to spend any money yet, but there will be a change ;)

Heey, I wish all of you a merry christmas. Some of you DO got 2 christmas days, in here we got one. But that doesn´t mean we can´t party well ;) They start to party over here already at 25 December, 0:00 AM.

Vergeleken met Nederland is Chili een hele andere wereld. Mijn eigen familie zou wel begrijpen wat ik bedoel, als ik aan de situatie in Indonesië denk.

In Nederland heb je altijd van die grote bouwprojecten en zien alle huizen er hetzelfde uit. In Chili, in iedergeval in Iquique, heeft elk huis een eigen ¨identiteit¨. Elk huis heeft z´n eigen kleurtje.

In Europa zijn we vooral gewend aan een koude kerst. Maar hier, in hartje zomer, hangt er kerstversiering aan de huizen. Nee, verwacht maar niet dat ze hier echte bomen hebben hoor, haha.

Ze hebben hier een bepaalde traditie rond kerst. De werknemers van bedrijven leveren elk jaar een klein deel van hun salaris in. Dat geld wordt besteed aan cadeautjes, die bestemd zijn voor de kinderen van de werknemers. Dan gebruikt het bedrijf een grote truck, versiert die met kerstdecoratie en rijdt vervolgens door de straten. Een nep kerstman (hebben we ooit een echte gehad?) geeft dan de cadeautjes aan de kinderen, en strooit met snoep. Dit doet me echt denken aan sinterklaas.

Ik geniet van elke dag dat ik hier ben. Soms staar ik naar hem, om dan te realiseren dat ik bij hem ben, en niet meer elke dag hoef te chatten. Dat hij diegene is, met wie ik al die maanden heb gechat en gebeld, om hem vervolgens weer te zien.

Ik moet zeggen, we gebruiken heel vaak de auto. De Mac Donald is aan het einde van de straat, maar we gingen alsnog met de auto daarheen, haha.

Papa, Mauricio zit me echt te verwennen! Ik heb nog geen geld hoeven uitgeven, maar daar komt wel verandering in hoor ;)

Heey, ik wens jullie allemaal prettige kerstdagen. Sommigen van jullie hebben tenminste wel 2 kerstdagen, hierzo hebben we er eentje. Maar dat betekent niet dat we niet net zo hard kunnen feesten ;) Ze beginnen hier al om 0:00 op 25 december met feesten.

Finally arrived

Allright, it´s allmost midnight over here. I just want to let you know, that I arrived safely at Iquique (Mauricio´s hometown) yesterday. And wow.. it surely was a long trip! First, I traveled from Amsterdam to Atlanta. The airplane was like 2 hours delayed. And then, when I got there.. I had to wait for like 6 hours! But luckily another Dutch girl could keep me in company. Then I took a flight to Santiago, the capital of Chile. That took another 9 hours ;) And then I had to wait again, for like 4 hours. And after thaaat, I finally took the airplane to Iquique. And that just took 2 hours.

Probably you´re thinking now that I´m suffering from a great jetlag. Well, the truth is.. I don´t suffer at all! I slept long enough in the airplane. And today I woke up at like 09:30! So hey, I´m not doing so bad ;)

About the welcome of the family here... they are so great! I wish I knew Spanish though, since a lot of the family members don´t speak English. Especially his little sisters, they keep talking to me in Spanish. It´s sooo cute, but I don´t understand what they say, haha! They are so curious, sometimes they even hug my leg :) Adinda (my sister), you should loooove kids, when you´ve met his little sisters! You can´t ignore their cuteness.

Mauricio.. gosh, he made me so shy at the airport. Just.. to see him again. After so many months.. He kept staring at me, while I had to wait for my luggage. Made me so shy... haha. It feels so good to be with him again :) I´m sure it´s worth the money that I spent, to get there. And wow.. especially the length of the trip. He´s just so sweet to me.

People from Holland would understand me, if I talk about ´chocolate cigarettes´. For the others... I´ll explain it to you right now! In Holland, we don´t got the traditional santa claus, we got the Dutch santa claus! When ´he´ is in our country, the shops sell traditional candy. One of those candy´s the chocolate cigarettes. The cigarettes look quite real, but really.. it´s chocolate! So.. Mauricio and I are planned to ´scam´ one of his friends, by saying: hey, want a cigarette? And then the person will realise it´s a fake. Haha, I hope we´ll find a victim tomorrow, I´ll keep you up to date!

Isn't it strange.. within a few hours, plus 24 hours, I'll be out of Holland. This will be the first time I'll be travelling alone. The first time I won't celebrate Christmas at home. The first time I'm the one who says goodbye..

I think I start to get nervous now, haha.

Is het niet een beetje raar.. binnen een paar uur, plus 24 uur, zal ik buiten Nederland zijn. Dit is de eerste keer dat ik alleen reis. De eerste keer dat ik kerst niet thuis vier. De eerste keer dat ik diegene ben die gedag zegt..

Ik denk dat ik nerveus begin te raken, haha.

Tuesday, 19 December 2006, I will finally go to Chile. Till then, I need to wait. One more week to go..

I haven't seen Mauricio since August. Almost 5 months have passed. I wonder if you could imagine, how hard it is, to live without your love by your side. But to know he's with me, although he's at the other side of the world.

I can hardly wait to pack my luggage! Need to pack it all up very soon, since I still got a lot of homework to do. It's kinda stressing, haha. But I'll survive, no worries.

Hallo allemaal!

Op dinsdag 19 december 2006 zal ik eindelijk naar Chili toe gaan. Tot die tijd moet ik nog even wachten. Nog een week te gaan..

Ik heb Mauricio niet gezien sinds augustus. Bijna 5 maanden zijn nu voorbij gegaan. Ik vraag me af of je je kan het voorstellen, hoe moeilijk het is om zonder je geliefde aan je zijde te leven. Maar om te weten dat hij bij mij is, ook al bevind hij zich aan de andere kant van de wereld.

Ik kan nauwelijks wachten om mijn baggage in te pakken! Ik moet het allemaal heel snel inpakken, omdat ik nog veel huiswerk moet maken. Dat werkt stressend. Maar ik overleef het wel, maak je geen zorgen.

Ik hou jullie op de hoogte! :)
